people are poetry

Sometimes, I see a person (usually someone who is doing nothing in particular - standing on a street corner, drinking coffee in a sunwarmed window, walking a dog, leaning against a building at just the right angle at just the right time of day...) and I am suddenly struck by the fact that they are alive. That there before me is another human being. Complete, though unknown, full of their own memories and thoughts an ideas and philosophies... and I have to resist the urge to run up to them and demand of them their life stories, or slide in beside them at the corner booth and just sit quietly... or break out the sketchbook... In general, I'm successful.

But I'm intensely grateful to The Sartorialist for taking snapshots for me, so I can look and look and get lost in the vast, spinning universe of another person... at leisure. And without the threat of police intervention and multiple restraining orders.

Here are a few souls to get lost in.

deep sea diving in the living room!

what's the greatest thing to do in the mountains in a snowstorm?
why, deep sea diving, of course!

now, i'm painfully aware that i am a terrible photographer, and that this has been done before, many times, and by far greater talents than i (for example, HERE), but the kids had a great time, and it made for a fun friday family night.

so - swallowing pride and my embarrassment at the quality of these pics (and the fact that the blue sheet is actually our painting dropcloth, and terribly stained and drawn-upon) - here's the film.

we went a little crazy on picnik with the sticker feature. :)

and the snow fell outside (almost two feet since last night!) in fat, fluffy flakes, and everyone 'swam' around the house in their bathing suits and goggles, while drinking cocoa with whipped cream, and we had on some happy music, and managed to have a great family night with a minimal amount of fighting and squabbling, and no TV. something which makes this mom super happy. :)

and now, naturally, the gang wants to do a knights and princesses photo shoot, as well as one involving flying carpets.... so there may be more of these in the future.

till then, have an amazing weekend, find the fun, and do something you (and your kids!) won't soon forget.

postapalooza!!!

i know, i know... six months with narry a post, and now, all of a sudden this flood. what can i say. we humans are nothing if not inconstant.
just wanted to share this awesome pic. owen got the hat from the 'favorite store' (aka, the dollar tree) and was showing us his prestidigitory skills. which are prodigious.

i made it HERE, (its beyond easy) at polaroin.com and i pretty much just love everything about it.
this is another one i made a while back on the same site.

you can play around with finishes and tints and things, and even 'write' on the space at the bottom.  i love the vintage-y look it gives the photos!
